Marcey first visited San Cristóbal in 1956, intending to stay a few weeks, but she was facinated by Chiapas and she and her partner Janet Marin settled here for good.
With a borrowed Rolleiflex camera she started exploring the streets of San Cristobal, the outlying towns, the fiestas and everday occurances. Her photographic archive of about 14,000 negatives is now part of the Na Bolom Museum in San Cristobal.
In 2001, when she was 90, her work was at last widely recognized; 75 of her photos were collected in a book, “The Burden of Time”/“El Cargo del Tiempo,” printed in a bilingual edition by Stanford University Press.
Marcey passed away on July 26, 2009 two months short of her 98th birthday.
