2007 AMIGOS GRANT AWARDS ANNOUNCED
 
 Grants have been awarded to the following organizations and projects:

Germinalia, A.C. $36,000 pesos
This grant is to renew the college scholarship for the 2006 recipient who completed her first year with high marks.  The grant will also fund the education and counseling of new scholarship recipients, who come from remote indigenous rural communities, on effective study habits and how to adjust to moving from a small rural setting to living in a city with over 100,000 inhabitants.  Germinalia is an all-volunteer NGO with virtually no overhead expense.

Sueñinos $ 12,000 pesos
This grant is to provide a portion of the funding to help inaugurate “LEER Y JUGAR,” (“Read and Play”), a class for young children of marginalized families.  Sueñinos is a successful two year-old program which includes nutrition and recreational support, in addition to educational classes for children span several age groups, some of whom would otherwise not be in school.    

Manos Amigas $30,000 pesos
This successful program started and managed by local Mexican citizens, is dedicated to rehabilitating adolescent boys who have been in trouble and/or come from home environments not suitable for children. A home is provided for the most serious cases and the focus for all participants is on conventional education and vocational training.  Medical and other services are also provided.  To date there has been no paid staff since the program began 14 years ago, with volunteers paying for the creation of the home and for its utilities and maintenance.  The Amigos grant is for hiring a qualified individual to provide vocational training for skills required in the construction industry, e.g. carpentry, brick masonry, electrician skills, etc.  This training will benefit forty boys who live in the special home and another 200 who remain living with their families.  

Madre Tierre Mexico, A.C. $80,000 pesos
This grant is to renew and expand Amigos funding for the training of “Health Promoters in the Sierra,” a program for which Amigos provided partial funding in 2006 for its first year development and implementation.  On site observations by Amigos representatives witnessed the successful start of this program which serves 40 small communities in the Sierra Mountains still suffering from the devastation of Hurricane Stan in late 2005.  The program trains community representatives to perform medical treatment and educate inhabitants on improving sanitary conditions in their homes and communities.  The grant includes 25,000 pesos for the purchase of medicines.

Hogar Comunitario Yachil Antzetic, A.C. $20,000 pesos
This grant is to assist in the continuation of a project entitled, “Las Orugas,” an educational program for existing young children of expectant single mothers. Teaching takes place with the mothers and children together, as well as with children-only classes.  The objectives of the program are to motivate children to develop mutual respect and avoid confrontation; to teach mothers to effectively handle motherhood and avoid violent behavior; to create a harmonious living environment after the new sibling is born; to create a mutual understanding of children’s rights.

Fortaleza de la Mujer Maya, A.C.  $10,000 pesos
Funded primarily by individual contributions since beginning 14 years ago, the Mission is to strengthen the independence, economic and otherwise, and confidence of Maya women through theatre workshops which lead to public stage performances; and to developing income producing skills for the women participants and their children.  The Amigos grant is for the purchase of sewing machines on which participants will learn to create commercial products.
